Hidden Dragon by LordOfDragons Hidden Dragon by LordOfDragons

Eventually did this one. To show that this skin is not crap and works well we make a little game of hide-and-seek. Sean is hiding somewhere in this image, try to find here. For those interested or those thinking I cheated you can find here the rendered dragon as used in the steps below.

Since I have not yet the 3D artwork to put up a similar scene using my game engine I used plan B doing some photo-manip. The forest image I found somewhere on google but I have no idea anymore where I got it from so credits for the image goes to whoever made it.

Sean has been render in Blender using a Spot Lamp with a quick foliage texture to simulate ( or at last I tried, it did not really work that well ) shadows cast by the foliage above and a Hemi-Sphere Lamp to get a reasonable diffuse light contribution. Lighting in general had been difficult since the present light in the image is tricky. Not sure if this is due to the camera used but the colors are slightly desaturated which is a pain to setup a good light rig for. Tried to do my best with the given situation.

After rendering I photo-maniped Sean into the image using GIMP and a 3-layer setup: the original image, the dragon above and another copy of the original image with an alpha mask to show only foliage which goes in front of Sean.

Next time I can hopefully do a proper setup using the game engine which is much better since there I can use HDRR which is something vanilla Blender does not directly support.

Sean is copyright Project Epsylon

Whow.. ! This one realy is great! *happily tailwags* Took me a few minutes to find her - but after seeing the Wings and Fins no the head I quickly found the eye and the rest followed instantly. Wonderful idea and rendering, as well as composition. Looks perfectly natural ^..^

Thanks. Always wanted to create a real photo-manip to show why dragons have the color they have without cheating :D

Which colors? Your avatar doesn't really show something so I can not tell.

Uhm... well. I still have to find an evening to draw me an icon for dA :) So - guess this one [link] will give a nice impression of the colorings for now ^..^

That would definitely be snowy environment. Something like the Himalaya for example.

*chuckles and nods* Well.. save for my mane ;) Guess there aren't any native plants with such coloring in the himalayian area ^..^

That's actually even a good color. Pale purple and pale blue are colors found in snowy/icy environments. Happens due to the way light is refracted in such conditions that blueish colors can move towards the upper light spectrum (right above blue is purple type color). So it's actually a good fit. What would also work for example would be an environment made of crystals inside a snowy/icy landscape. One has to keep in mind that in colder locations our eyes have anyways troubles recognizing silhouettes so that would help.

She's definitely make you apologize quickly. That said she's not aggressive in any way... she just prefers to not be bothered by anybody.

I found the dragon by the wing bones :). Good job on the camouflage.

Some also found her by the horns. In the newest version of the skin the horns have been toned down a bit so it hides better. Wings bones actually are treacherous as they introduce straight lines which don't exist like that in a forestine environment. Better lighting conditions would help there too. That said if you don't know something is in the bushes I doubt you would notice it :P

That's very true, a lot of animals rely on the fact that no one is looking specifically for them. I probably wouldn't have noticed the critter without being told there was something to look for, unless I had a moment that was 'Something looks out of place'. :)

The poor people. So this camouflage is for hunting more than hiding?

No, it's for hiding. But in the game you can use this hiding ability to deal with hostile people.

I guess unless you are a Predator you won't have 99% camouflage :D . But this guy should own various dinosaurs in terms of matching skin color ;)

Yeah the horns are a little give-away. Not sure if I can change the colors a bit there without turning it un-realistic.

Maybe toning them down a bit but only maybe. For the time being the most important task is to finish up the belly-leg joints and the feet ( still untextured white :O )

whoops, sorry i was going on previous comments for gender reference lol. and its not a mobile, its the giant $600 brick of plastic that everyone but me stood outside in the rain around here for 2 days to get. DA apparently doesn't consider it a mobile.

Maybe I also just forgot to tick it, who knows. I think they consider it a mobile but I'm not sure. Depends on what kind of referal string the browser on your PSP sends. I assume they use their own kind of browser and not something like firefox.

I see. Still though it depends on what referal string is send. I assume if DA finds no recognized computer browser referal string it flags the user as "mobile".
